Sleep on rocks!
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:54:34 am »

By sleep on rocks, I don't mean having the poor Dwarfs sleeping on the ground. I mean getting masons to make beds from rocks and raw metals.

The uses could be:
You forgot to get an axe (or anything to make it with) and cannot chop wood.
However, having miners and a mason (Like you always should), you could provide beds.

And just think of how amazing it would be:
An artifact bed made of adamantine with some bad ass engravings on it.

artefact beds can already be of any material.

Otherwise, if you mean all we need is rocks ,I am agianst this. with wood you can at least suspend your disbelief somewhat and think that they use sawdust for a blanket..

I think beds should need either rock or wood AND a piece of cloth.

What disbelief needs suspending?  Stone beds are historical fact just Google it, of course the blanket would help a lot (I'd imagine that just about all stone beds had straw or branches placed on them for padding for even the poorest homes).  But as a rigid prerequisite I don't see why a blanket is necessary as your dwarves will sleep on a rough stone floor if necessary and a stone bed is a slight improvement over that because if raises you off the ground (coldest air is on the ground along with vermin, dust & dirt).

I dont contest the existance of Beds not made of wood. I contest the existance of beds made of wood, rock or metal that anyone would want to sleep in without also adding a matress and/or straw at the very least, hence why I say you should need rope reed or somesuch item as well to make beds. And with wood at least the sawdust could be used for cushioning ^^

Perhaps normal wooden beds for usual use, and soft beds that require a cloth matress for happy thoughts, especially in cold climates?

The actual bed unit should be the bedding, not the frame.

Aye. It seems dwarfs should rather sleep on the floor, but with blankets/sleeping bag, than sleep  on a bed frame without blankets/sleeping bag/mattress. Nice beds should need the material for the frame, then 2-3 units of cloth or leather, and something for stuffing/padding...

Also, hamocks(for a simple bed made out of only cloth) for poor/undeveloped forts.
