Megaproject: Dwarven Hot Tub
« on: February 24, 2010, 09:53:27 pm »

I've started my most recent fort into the side of the valley, at the bottom of which rests a river.  The region is frigid, and all water remains frozen 9 months out of the year, so I thought "hey, it would be awesome to have a lake at my front door."  And so, the following plan was hatched:
- Wall the map edges of the valley, and pave over the river with the exception of a pumping tower.
- run magma from a nearby vent under the river to thaw the ice, so I can pump all year round'.

And this got me thinking, "wouldn't it be nice if this lake that wasn't frozen all the time?"  To do this, I think that I'll have to heat all of the stone that makes up the lake bed with either a lattice of magma ducts, or one giant magma cavern (I'm leaning towards the former at the moment).

And thus is born, the Dwarven Hot Tub: a magma heated lake that remains liquid and steamy in the dead of winter.

Any thoughts/suggestions/build tips are welcome.

Do you mean to fill the lake all the way or just keep it to 3/7 and lower so that the dwarves can actually soak in it without drowning?

It will actually be a 3 z level lake (maybe 4 if I want to cover my fort entrance and provide a path to higher ground)

Keep in mind that the magma has to be in constant flow to keep the water melted - I'd suggest keeping it between like 4/7 and 5/7. And yeah, 3/7 for water is the best bet for being a pool dwarves can go in without spamming you with dangerous terrain cancellations. If the lake's going to be multiple z-levels high, I'm not sure, but the top level might freeze anyhow.

That was the idea of heating all the sides.  if all supporting ice is melted, I think a frozen top will cave in and melt...  come to think of it, this may cause an unending chain of cave ins during winter.  :X

This reminds me of when someone collapsed ice into some melted water, the water splashed up froze dropped back down. More water splashed up and froze then came back down. This happened three or four times then it finally stopped with a nice ice cone frozen from the top of an outside floor covered cavern.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I've done this before, both with an ice repeater and by pumping an entire floor of my obsidian tower full of magma, then filling a room above to 2/7-3/7 water with buckets. Unfortunately I couldn't turn the temperature back on since half my dwarf kids were coated in magma goo and loved to run to the booze stockpile or light their parents on fire. They liked the statue garden in the hot tub though. It's a very fun and very dwarfy thing to do.
