40d Windows 7 Failure on final embark
« on: February 11, 2010, 08:58:54 pm »

I tried both 40d17 and 40d16 in Windows 7 and both times it completely crashed after preparing for journey and before map load.

Make sure your graphics drivers are completely up to date.

No this is definitely a bug. I updated to 40d17 and my video card drivers. I started a game on the same map both with full screen and minimum settings five times each. When it was full screen it crashed every time and when it was minimized it loaded. Also 'Play now!' and 'Prepare carefully' may have a factor.

So the last test was in a minimized window, 7x7 region and prepared embark. Loaded fine.

What's the resolution of your screen, and are you using a 16x16 tileset or the default 8x12 one?  The game doesn't allow a horizontal grid size over 200, and I think there's a bug in 40d16 (and 40d17?) where it crashes if you try.  If you're using 8x12, a horizontal resolution of 1600 or greater could cause that crash.

Ah. Just got a new computer so that's prolly it. But I found a work around where if you keep it minimized until the game fully loads it won't crash if you maximize the screen.

I'm glad you found a workaround, but it would be helpful for fixing the bug itself if you answered the questions above:

What's the resolution of your screen, and are you using a 16x16 tileset or the default 8x12 one?

Ze Spy -- as was already said, this is a known bug.  And I'm pretty sure s/he was smart enough to download the one labeled "Windows."

i think i have the answer

"windows not updated"

"openGL support needed"

"antiviruses(antiairvar(or whatever the hell do you call the "umbrella" antivir) tends to think that a harmless code is a virus)

its a bug if those don't work , i can't help anymore
