Having an issue with some dwarven stupidity
« on: February 23, 2010, 05:47:22 pm »

Ok so, I redirected a river to flow past the entrance of my fort and into a nearby chasm, after some slight flooding and some additional mining everything went more or less as planned. After a while I noticed my miners weren't doing any work so I zoomed to one and found that 2 of them are sitting in the channel I dug desperately trying to drink the water that is flowing into the chasm and failing. So now the both of them are starving and thirsty because they have spent all this time failing to drink the water.

Does anyone have any idea if I can stop them from being stupid and get them to go drink somewhere else? Losing 2 of my miners including the legendary one will screw up my fort a little.

It's more likely they're trapped.  Miners are notoriously thick when it comes to channeling, and will actually channel the ground out from beneath themselves if the opportunity presents itself.  You pretty much have to micromanage any channel designations as a result.  Instruct them to dig their way back up to where they have access to the fort's resources, and you should be fine.

They have a way out, I dug ramps in the side of the channel because they fell in a few time while making it. For some reason they just really want to drink that water.

Are you entirely out of booze or something?  Because if you are, I suggest you fix that ASAP, then activate/deactivate those miners from the military to force them to go grab the freshly made drink instead of going for water they can never reach.

I have a lot of booze but it is all wine so they might be bored of it or something, I'll try enlisting them.

EDIT
Well they still refuse to leave, going to try adding NO_EAT NO_DRINK to the raws then walling off the chasm so none of them ever do this again.

Perhaps designate a drinking zone somewhere else and going to (O)rders -> (z)one preferences (I think) -> Zone-only drinking?

Dwarves will never drink water unless no alcohol is available, so I guess they might really be trapped. Build a up stair or ramp for them (preferably designated in a way in wich they themselves can build it), that might help.

Be careful when designating ramps, sometimes they don't form they way you want and end up leading into a wall, use stairs instead.
