Will Tower Caps grow to full size below loose stones?
« on: February 20, 2010, 11:56:01 am »

I know the saplings will, but will they be stunted by the chunks of basalt sitting on top of them?

Trees can't grow through items. This includes tower caps. Get to dumping that stone, else your tree farm will be unproductive  :(

Well, since flow pushes stone, couldn't you justwash the stone down the drain?

No because stone is too heavy, unless you're using magma, but then you'd have to reflood the area.

Tower cap saplings will grow under stone, but they will stay that way until the stone is lifted. Wait long enough and the saplings will instantly grow to full size. I think I've had a few 'cancels dump item: dangerous terrain' due to a sapling growing to full size from the stone bieng removed and the dwarf gets knocked to the side, or maybe from stepping on a dead shrub or whatever that was hiding a sapling which allowed it to grow.

Hey on the bright side.

You can dump stone in your well to prevent clogging.

I've found that dumping all the stone tends to be pretty slow and inefficient. Instead, I just set up my Legendary Stonecrafter(s) wherever I need to get rid of a ton of stone quickly, and build a craftdwarf's workshop with stone crafts set to repeat. It also adds some wealth to your fortress in the process.

Yes ... I use stone alot and I've recently begun making stone factories to employ half the fortress in making thousands of stone blocks. It cleans the place up and (I think) it makes furniture, roads, supports etcetera of a higher quality.

What I meant however. Was that you can designate a temporary garbage dump in non-accessible areas like a well or channels. Dump a stone on each square and there's no way it can clog with towercaps.
