Deconstructed workshop, its log disappeared

Had a craftsdwarf workshop, one dorf was inside it working on some skull totems when I decided to deconstruct and replace it with a tanners workshop. Suddenly:

Peasant cancels construct building: job item lost or destroyed.

And the log used to build the craftsdwarf shop was nowhere to be found. I only had 2 logs! (One used to make a barrel - had to brew since there's no water). Now I only have 1. I checked the levels above and below to see if it had fallen down the nearby volcano shaft. (though the magma part of it is too far away for it to have reached if it went flying). Nothing there. Stocks screen doesn't show it either.

So:

1) This was my 10th or so time deconstructing/reconstructing with this log. Are logs only able to be used in reconstruction/deconstruction a limited # of times? (unlikely)

2) Could firesnakes from the nearby volcano tile have killed the log?

3) Bug?

Yes, fire snakes can and will destroy any wooden items lying on the floor.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
