Steam Power

IDK if this has been suggested, but we can already make steam, we should be able to make elaborate steam engines to provide power in a similar way to pumps and water wheels, the advantage over water wheels being FAR more power generated.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.

I would prefer if toady made the mechanics that makes one possible, ie steam, with heat related to pressure, and moving fortress parts so we can make huge engines.

If some internet meme had topped the vote or something, I would ignore it entirely, and if something like electricity or steam power or rifles had topped the vote, I'd probably have put up a note much earlier on about why I didn't think I'd be going there.

Not that I want to turn this into a completely mechanized steam-driven universe.

Quote from: Toady One
Metal rails seem vaguely modern, going by our favorite dubious source, but I'm not as opposed to them as I am to steam locomotives and light bulbs and nuclear reactors, since dwarves should be capable of using metal if it's around.

Electricity is in about the same category for me as steam locomotives, I guess, as far as whether I'd ever find time to work on something like that for this game.

The phrase "too-advanced" process in the raws wasn't referring to the temperature, but to all this sort of thing.  Wikipedia has the Deville process at 1859.  I don't know the specifics, but since there were batteries and steam locomotives and electric telegraphs around then, I didn't want to go that far ahead in general, unless this stuff is demonstrably more likely than any of the previous mentioned critters.

Also, it's been suggested approximately one billion times, as demonstrated by typing "steam" into the handy search bar.

You should rather petition for enhancements for modding of workshops and skills.

In next version, we will have custom workshops. It is not so far fetched that you could be able to mod custom workshop with power input, and, well, power output is just negative input.

Add custom coal reaction and you are set. Hard part would be to make sure this reaction has inverse scaling than any other skill (more skilled -> reaction takes longer)
