Journey to the Center of the Earth
« on: February 14, 2010, 10:48:55 pm »

I've prepared my descent vessel as mentioned in the wiki http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Stupid_dwarf_trick#Journey_to_the_Center_of_the_Earth

The D.S. Callchannels is equipped with a bridge, treasury, living quarters, and food and drink stores. It has a Billon coated hull and four turbines hooked up to two generators to power through the dense magma. Controls to seal the entrances and launch the ship are inside so adventurous dwarves can launch when ready.

You too can launch the D.S. Callchannels for yourself by downloading the save file here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=1860

Images produced with StoneSense and VisualFortress respectively.

is it the right shape to get all the way to the bottom without hitting an overhang inside the pipe?

I recruited most of the fortress and put it in there. Then I hit the levers. It wasn't that awesome. Woulda been coolwer if it had survives, just stopped at the bottom of the magma pipe. I'm watching the tantrum spirals now.

You wasted a perfectly good magma pipe. You could've made a stairwell to the bottom of it and make your fortress under a magma pipe, then seal it forever under the magma.

I think I'll try it in Adventure mode.

Pancake.

Caveins do not leave empty space. Each tile proceeds downwards until it is blocked. That means ceilings. Your dwarves will be crushed out of existence 100% of the time.

It's true. The roofs collapsed and nothing was left at all. *yawn*

If you really want to send a dwarf to the center of the earth, put them in a cage and dump said cage into a bottomless pit/chasm. I don't think that magma flow tiles act as chasms.

Turn off caveins and imagine they're plunging down an endless hole instead by severing the bridge.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

To be honest, I thought this topic was going to be about that Easter Egg from the 2D version.

Turns out most of the nobles had the same room. Moreover, this same room was apparently bedroom, office, and dining room. I don't know what they thought was in this room... I do know the doors were all locked, so none of them could get IN.

Also, apparently there was a fire inside, and had been for months. I feel I should investigate this at some point.
