Stagnant Human Siege
« on: February 15, 2010, 11:10:16 am »

My fortress recently got sieged by fifteen to twenty humans, with no provocation at all and before 80 population (ie. Before sieges are supposed to happen, I think). In addition to this, the humans are just milling around near the place where they arrived, not doing anything even when I opened up all my defenses. However, they slaughtered the recruit I sent near them.

Question 1: Is this a bug? Should I report it?

Question 2: What should I do about it? I don't have enough military dwarves to waste them fighting off the humans (Although I could probably do it), I'm too chicken to allow anybody out in case they get killed, and I was literally just beginning construction of my external walls (Which I want to complete before proper sieges start coming.

Arbitrary Question 3: Can marksdwarves shoot down through fortification "floors" (ie. fortifications built one z-level below them)?

If your kingdom started at war with the humans they will show up with sieges before 80 dwarves. There was provocation -- the war.

Also, humans tend to mill around. Unlike other sieges they like to try to wait you out.

(There is a story behind this. . .)

This is an Alder Omelette. All craftsdwarfship is of highest quality. It is encircled with bands of cheese. It menaces with spikes of bacon, ham, and peppers. On the object is an image of dwarves in egg white. The dwarves are eating.

Would the fact that humans have traded with me beforehand matter?

The same civ of humans, too, judging by the fact that only one human civ shows up when I press "c".

Give lots of people crossbows and bolts and send them to the enemy.

Did their liaison die? The death of a diplomat means war.

yes, this is expected behavior. Humans will sit there and do nothing for long periods when they come to siege, accomplishing nothing but keeping your outside operations from happening.

I've found it's just easier to sic the champion squads on them. They scatter like a kitten after 10 z-levels at the mere sight of a champion.

Goblins are the only race that wait until 80 to siege. Everyone else will siege before then if you've pissed them off enough.

Evidently being murdered by a dwarf is the only way to get into the goblin equivalant of heaven, which is why they only attack en masse once the fortress has been up and running for some time. Of course, being goblins, once they see thier friends and the anguish on thier faces as thier faces fly by, they get freaked out and decide maybe even heaven isn't worth THAT.

The goblin requirements for heaven ... that might be to kidnap X amounts of dwarves too.

I checked legends and read about a dwarf who was kidnapped when she was 5 .. and when she was 6.. and 7.. and 9.. and 10.. and 10 again.. and then she grew up. Apparently there were two goblin civilisations who played a tug of war game with her.

The crossbow squad, 'The Bolts of Fleeing' wouldn't even show up.

So yeah... Thanks to incompetence on my part (forgetting to close the drawbridge to the fortress) all my soldiers left to drink/eat/follow their squad leaders as they went to etc...

And then about half of the two remaining squads passed out, and I was annihilated. Although, I did manage to scare off the humans, at the cost of half my military.

Oh, and I think their diplomat died when their caravan saved my from annihilation by slaughtering an ambush back when I didn't even have a military.

Now working on my defenses, so could someone answer Arbitrary Question 3?

Fortifications don't provide floors, and walls that have been carved into fortifications have solid floors.

if you want to shoot through the floor, you'll need to use grates or bars.
