When I've blocked off brooks, I've just used four pumps that pumped out the line of tiles I was trying to drain, since even 7/7 water is removed dang-nigh instantly when the pump is running. Then, very carefully and patiently, building the wall from the far side, in a straight line. It's nice to have experienced masons/ legendary dwarves around for this, since  they move/build more quickly.  Brooks, however, don't have the risk of carp showing up.

My river is extremely wide - something like 37 tiles across, I think. It goes cuts the whole map in two, from north to south, and is surrounded by immensely high cliffs. A four tile wide stream joins it from the top of the cliffs via waterfall.

I don't want to dam it, and I'd prefer to have as little impact on the surroundings as possible. What I'm aiming for is a column, probably 3x3 with a 1-tile stairway down the centre, piercing the river and sinking into the bedrock underneath.

Just treat it like an aquifer then. It's basically the same: Lots of water, seeping in way too fast from all sides. Build a ring of pumps like this:

~~~~~~~~~
~~~ppp~~~
~~~ppp~~~
~pp...pp~
~pp...pp~
~pp...pp~
~~~ppp~~~
~~~ppp~~~
~~~~~~~~~

~ - water
p - pumps, facing outwards
. - place for you to build a ring of walls

Just pray for the carp to let you build in peace or Fun will ensue... You should probably build a platform at least 1 z-level above the water an station marksdwarves there. They can keep the fishy menace at bay while you architects try to build pumps in the middle of a raging river.

Yeah... after losing about three reclamation squads to carp and hippo-induced tantrum spirals, I, uh... may have edited the raws to remove their ability to swim. Or to breathe underwater. I got somewhat fed up with them. The don't bother me anymore.

The above method is more or less what I was planning, I'm not sure how to deal with the inability to build downwards, though. Short of using a cavein to try and drop a mason into the hole and hoping he survives...

Yep. Station a recruited mason on a bridge with some stone, save, retract bridge, savescum if he can't build the stairs after being dropped.  Or put several masons (or dyers) out there to save time.

Well, I managed to do it once, but I'm trying to pierce it at a second point and the game is steadfastly refusing to co-operate. Is there any way to mod the game so water freezes at a higher temperature?
