Smelting Animals: An Age Old Topic

It used to be that any animal that came from the smelter (via smelter reaction) was considered a vermin no matter what it's traits would normally be.  As one person put it, 'milkable cows', because vermin are milkable and normally cows are not...
However many things have changed since back then, and I must ask: is this problem (above) still the case, or can we smelt creatures (and have them not be vermin) now?  So awesome would it be to make golems...

Yes, it's still the case.

And still the case in the upcoming version, too.
