Windows Update Error 80070424...?
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:41:30 pm »

I realize this isn't the Microsoft help forums, I swear I already tried there some time ago to no avail.  So, I figured I'd ask here since there's quite a few more intelligent people here compared to there  :)  I essentially can't update my Windows Vista, it simply says the error code is 80070424.  Tried Google searching for answers, there's apparently a million ways to not fix the problem.  The only solution that I haven't tried is reinstalling Vista entirely, which is problematic... my computer came with Vista, and I don't think I have the Vista installation discs.  And I heard reinstalling an entire OS isn't easy, or quick.

Get Windows 7 instead, it would probably be easier and only slightly more expensive.

Brbz googling problem lawl
EDIT: Looks like you're missing an OS file in Vista: either you have a virus or a shitty anti-virus program. How good are you with computers?

Unless somebody knows why they need to upgrade to Windows 7 (hint: theyre on XP), upgrading to Windows 7 isn't necessary.

OP, the usual cause of this error is a de-registration of the Windows Update core DLLs (why that happens, I don't know offhand) or corruption of some portion of the Windows Update stack. If you've already tried using regsvr32 like most of the solutions on the web suggest, then a reinstall's your only likely option. It's not that hard to do, though it can take some time.

There may be a system restore partition on your computer. When you boot it up, see if there's a "Boot Menu" option on the splash screen. Hit whatever key it suggests and look for a system restore type of feature. Keep in mind that this'll nuke everything on the Windows partition, so back up your shit first.

0x80070424 means "The specified service does not exist as an installed service.". That is most likely referring to the Windows Update service, or other services it is dependent on.

I'd say your Windows installation is not quite right.

You must locate the install disc -- if your computer comes with Vista, the vendor will include a disc for reinstallation (the disc probably bearing their logo instead of saying Windows with the biggest font) -- and use its repair option.

If that doesn't work you'll have to reinstall.
