quit but dont save dont abandon
« on: November 20, 2007, 02:37:00 am »

i have wanted a menu option to quit but not to save my information
not to quit my fortress
and not to save current progress

as is i have to use windows xp taskmanager to close the program (best way not to save) and reload the previous save next time
works for me sure but id rather not have to even exit DF to aquire this

i still dont mind the game saving and quitting so i have to reload, or saving once per year and continuing

i just dont want to abandon and save

id rather just abandon my progress and load again later
(incase of superficial accidents hampering gameplay)
if ye know what i means

Yeah, being able to save without exiting, play a bit, and then quit without saving would be really nice - especially when I get the urge to screw around(caged bronze colossis in the metting hall? Lets open the door during a patry and see what happens!).

The manual workaround is to make a backup copy of the save (using Windows Explorer) before you play.

A hassle, yes.  But very do-able if you just leave the DF folder open.

If you use task manager to close DF, your save may well end up corrupted. This is because the game updates your save slightly while you play, and if you quit without finalising the save, things don't always work right when you load it back up. Needless to say, messing with your save is a bad idea, especially when the game isn't exactly bug free in the first place. Make a back up manually and completely replace the new save with the back up if you really think you need to go back.

Press escape first so the game is paused and you shouldn't have this problem. But a quit without saving would be nice.

I don't see how this will solve the problem. The save has already been updated while you've been playing. Pausing it while you quit won't undo those changes.

I have never had a problem using cntrl alt delete to exit. Are you sure that the game changes the save files while you play?

I've never had a corrupted save using the task manager either.  And I've done it a lot.

Yes. Can't remember why, but Toady said that it was a bad idea to do it on the last version, I doubt the added complexity of the new version has made this a sensible thing to do now. It's buggy enough without messing with it more  ;)

The current version puts all modified files for a currently running game in the folder 'current'. Once you actually SAVE from the menu (or abandon), it copies the updated files to the save folder.

This version is protected from ctrl-alt-del corrupting saves. It is safe now, as safe as it is for any other program, anyway.

Edit: grammar for clarity

You can't quit without saving because the files are modified as you play.    This is why ctrl-alt-deleting out of a sticky situation corrupts your data.
