I have a Dwarven Dream.
« on: January 24, 2010, 06:05:57 pm »

Been seeing alot of amazing, ongoing stories about the DF game and the dwarves in it lately, so I decided to write a short one myself.

I'm very excited about this release. not just due to all the new features either. I'm excited because I had a dream.
My dwarves were anticipating a huge battle, I decided to bring miners instead of masons and only could afford to bring a few floor hatches. The miners were just finishing up the defenses, it consisted of ambush digouts and a ramp going down two Z levels into a three tile wide bottleneck, with ramps going up and down to block archer line of sight. the rest of the map I carefully ordered to be channeled away, nothing was getting past us.

then, the goblins came. the first wave consisted of normal goblins, your regular lashers and hammergoblins, as they headed toward the main defenses, I ordered the hatches to be opened, my legendary wrestlers came out of them, there was one per digout. the goblins were taken off guard, and were spread out from covering all that ground. the dwarves made quick work of them.
The screen paused, it zoomed over to the edge of the screen where what looked like a trade caravan had appeared. I gasped because I've heard about it before. They brought Battle Wagons. I immediately regretted making my bottleneck so large. I sent the ambuser dwarves from my digouts to charge the caravan to distract it. Arrows came piling out of all 9 tiles, pelting my dwarves with unrightous hellfire. Quickly, I ordered my workers to cave in the two tiles on left and right of an area in my bottleneck, forming a space that looked like this:

Code: [Select]
X X R R R X X
X X o o o X X
X o o o o o X
X o X o X o X
X o o o o o X
X X o o o X X
hopefully that would stop it, but by the time it was done my ambusher dwarves were a pile of gore, and the wagon was moving slower, it was a wheel was probably broken from running over my dwarves. It kept moving toward my main defenses. I was worried that I had missed a spot on my channel and it was trying to flank me, I rechecked and found that it was still one, immaculate line. Comforted, I returned to look at the Battle Wagon. It was right up to the point in my bottleneck where I had caved in the tiles:

Code: [Select]
X X R R R X X
X X O O O X X
X O O O O O X
X O X O X O X
X O w w w O X
X X w w w X X
X X w w w X X

...
Code: [Select]
X X R R R X X
X X O O O X X
X O O O O O X
X O w w w O X
X O w w w O X
X X w w w X X
X X O O O X X

SHIT SHIT [WALL_DESTROYER] SHIT SHIT!

This was bad, I ordered my dwarves to pile back to the end of the bottleneck, preparing for the worst. The ramps did have their use it seems, my dwarves weren't shot at until the wagon was right at the end of the bottle. When it reached the end, I ordered my military to charge. All my champions attacked at once, the wagon was still moving uphill due to ramps, and was at a disadvantage. The losses were heavy, but the Battle Wagon was defeated and we were victorious.

Then I woke up.
