Adventure Mode Improvements
« on: May 17, 2008, 05:29:00 pm »

Okay, here are some ideas to improve Adventure Mode:

*Fetch quests: Get the artifact from the goblins, kobolds, enemy civilization, or ruins!  Would be best if there were randomly generated artifacts made in worldgen.  This is just to keep all quests from just being killing quests.  Make a fortress, and get sent to find that fortress's artifacts!

*Quest rewards

*Better caves

*More professions in towns

*More quest types

And yes, I know fetch quests have never really been loved, but quests other than "kill the ettin" quests would be awesome.

There's already more professions in town; I dunno what they do, really.   All these things will work their way in sooner or later, of course- but some things (like the coin collector quests, and libraries) would have some powerful benefits for fleshing out the desolate adventure mode.

I will tell you this now

If Toady EVER makes delivery quests that are simple "Get this to there"... I will destroy him!!!

Frankly I hate those so much... I am a hero... not the freeken mail service!!!

So is Indiana Jones. The difference here is that you would be grabbing things WORTH grabbing. Not 'trade me a frying pan for a flower pot'. Then again, unless the mayors see sense and reward you for the quests...

Well I meant (and said) Delivery... not aquisition quest.

Go into the haunted house to get this jewel crafted from 1000 demons that could destroy the world, in which you will need to fight ghosts crafted from the husks of long since dead gods = Good

Deliver this Holy Grail to Santa and get a present back to me so I can save the world = EVIL

Mayor: "Go get the holy blade Carptooth for me.  I need to research it."

Adventurer: "A FETCH QUEST!?! ACK!"

Mayor: "You get to keep the blade."

Adventurer: "OKAY! I'LL GET IT!"

Exactly Jack  :)

A wider array of quests would be very cool, but until ranged weapons are adjusted (they kill me more often than anything... perfect headshots no less) I don't see wading into the adventure mode for much of anything.

Elven Druid: Go fetch me a Holy Hand Grenade, I simply must have one for my collection!

Urist Adventuredwarf: What's in it for me?

Elven Druid: Nothing, except the respect of my civilization!

Urist Adventuredwarf: OK!

*some time adventuring*

Urist Adventuredwarf: I have returned with your Holy Hand Grenade, here it is! *hands it to Elven Druid and takes a few steps back*

Elven Druid: Where is the gold cross that is supposed to be on it?

Urist Adventuredwarf: You mean the one encrusted with diamonds and rubies? I just sold it because you wouldn't pay me for fetching the damn thing.

Elven Druid: You fiend! Just wait until I call the gaur- *explodes in a ball of light, elven offal flying everywhere*

Urist Adventuredwarf: Who wants the respect of pointy-ears anyways. Oh, that's a nice bow, after I wipe off the blood it might be worth something...

Screw fetch quests, but questing for artifacts would be cool so long as you could keep the artifact if it's useful to you while still completing the quest.

But of course, that would bring up the question as to why someone is sending you out to get something in the first place, if he's just going to let you keep it.

Delivery quests...  Deliver the head of {questtarget:1} to {questgiver}.  If that doesn't work, deliver the head of {questgiver} to the nearest refuse pile.  That is how you complete a delivery quest.

But really, the random jobs that get assigned to wannabe adventurers can't be called "quests".  Quests are long-term adventures on an epic scale.  The "Go here and kill this thing that lives *here*" thingies are just tasks.  Errands.  A real quest would have you putting in a lot more time than you might have expected, and will span a very large area.

Heh heh...

Gandalf the Grey:  I need you to deliver this *one ring* to Mt. Doom.  Mt. Doom is far to the east.  Complete this task and I will give you a Large .

Lord of the Rings.  One big delivery quest.
