It's adventure mode. There are always arrows coming out of nowhere.

(unless you're not actively trying to kill a civilization)

If your facing down a giant desert scorpion and don't have any ranged attacks, you're best bet for survival is to grab it's tail. When it's tail is in a grapple, it can't attack with it's stinger, and will always try to break the grapple first before attacking you. Don't be discouraged if it breaks the grapple. Just grab the tail again. If you have anything resembling agility or wrestling skill, you should be able to get a blow in. If you can, try and render it prone. That'll take it down to one-third of it's normal speed, meaning the beast won't be able to break your grapple and sting you before you can react.

If your up against a pack of animals you don't think you can fight off, try finding a nearby tree and hiding. Just put the tree between you and the pack (they should all be out of your field of view) and hit Shift+S. Sneaking is usually pretty useless for gaining the upper hand in combat, but for avoiding combat, it can't be beat. This trick is also handy against ranged attackers. Sure, Shoots Eagleeye the elf bowman might be able to spot you from half a mile away under normal circumstances, but once you start sneaking, he won't see you till you pop out from a nearby tree.

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

Or not at all, throwing doesn't de-stealth you.

How about shooting? I'm not sure, but I vaguely remember that being stealthy as well.

You don't go un stealth if you fire an arrow or bolt unless their right next to you and their not unconscious.

Just started my first adventurer, official pompous name Erith the Armored God of Swords. Lots of good info here, thanks for the thread. Drinking blood+vomit even if it's dwarf antifreeze somehow horrifies me though.

This is what I love about DF threads. They're both incredibly helpful, and hilarious.
