Stark raving mad with good reason
« on: February 04, 2010, 04:44:24 am »

After re-listening to all the df talks I found myself wondering about this. Now, Toady mentioned that eventually he wants to have people building their personality based on their experiences, a lofty goal but attainable. Now, my question is, would mental illness factor into this? For instance, a dwarf which didn't have many successes in life could become easily discouraged, but one which is out and out called a failure may develop a phobia for trying new things or become depressed. One which is beaten as a child may become sadistic or withdrawn and one who feels betrayed may seek revenge.

For example, say we have a dwarf that comes from a highly competitive but very polite fortress.  Say that this dwarf is personally wronged and even physically harmed by the expedition leader. Should there be a chance that this dwarf may simply snap and become a complete sociopath who butchers the leader and serves him to his fellow dwarfs? Should insanity and other mental effects be handed more based on the things causing them rather then a little happiness meter?

What I'd like to see is mental instability play together with the dwarves religion.

Worship Iteg, god of deformation? Well just pick this knife and lacerate your face horribly a bit, you'll fit in perfectly!

God of vengeance and revenge? I heard that Urist, the guy you have a grudge with, really likes goblets, and he just bought a golden one decorated with turquoises, for a hefty amount of his saved money. How about going by his room for a visit when he goes off again, and chuck the goblet down the chasm? Or if you really feel like it, pay a visit when he's sleeping, and chuck his kid down the chasm.

But yeah, what you're saying would be amusing to witness. I figure only the most dead-end of dwarves though would succumb to such extreme acts. Maybe they'd just go down the goblin route? Stab the guy when no one is watching, and leave the scene post-haste so there's no way you're getting caught and punished. Follow the guy around a bit and go "I want to Conduct Meeting!" and then, SNIK!

I think mental illness in dwarves was actually a kind of goal(Not sure on what exactly it was called) in the long term, I'm not sure though, but with all the detail planned for DF, I wouldn't be surprised if there will be 4 or 5(Or even more) professions/skills related to treating those mentally ill dwarves.

Now the real question is, can we (eventually) use the mentally ill dwarf's soul(Souls coming next update) to make weapons out of them? A nice big axe with Urist Massmurderer's soul in it seems fitting.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

The main problem is : who is going to cure my WHOLE fortress? Immigrants are meat, and doctors are butchers, so...
