Freshwater Lakes

Will dwarves still gather water to drink from freshwater lakes, or does the water have to be from a brook/stream/river? I found what may be a perfect spot for a new fortress, but there's no running water, only this freshwater lake.

The only way to know is to go and try.

Since its freshwater they should drink from it just fine, but you should build a well just in case.

I'm pretty sure any water is ok to drink if you don't get the "This map has saltwater, it will be hard to survive." (or however it is worded) message.

Right then. I plan on building a well anyway, but it usually takes me a while to get one started and I don't want my dwarves dying of thirst beforehand  ;D.

They will drink it but get an extra bad thought from drinking stagnant water.

I'm pretty sure lakes don't count as stagnant. And if you've got an edge of the lake on the map the water supply will be infinite, as well.
