Damn geese.
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:36:18 am »

I'm having a bit of a problem with the local population of geese... When I first arrived there were about 20 of them just sitting in the river. I thought nothing of it, how harmful could a few geese be, right? Now i'm in my third year of being terrorized by these monstrosities and i'm at quite a loss as to what to do. They have been breeding like rats and I now have over 5 pages of geese on the unit list. I also have 2 pages of goslings. I don't have a military or any hunters yet so I have no way of keeping the population in check. I roped some war dogs near the river in the hopes that they would kill a few of the bastards. It turns out I was basically feeding some goats to a T-Rex. The dogs were devoured by the geese. Quite bloody. I think they did actually kill a few of them though. I was too scared to look... Any advice on how to deal with these guys? I'm sure if I trained a military they could handle them easily, but what fun is that? I can't drown the bastards as they swim in the river for fun. It's not uncommon for me to see a gaggle of at least a dozen of them. I have a feeling that they would end up killing untrained dwarves.

Geese are scary in real life too.

Build a blind and use shotguns, wait wrong technology.

Build Fortifications and equip some marksdwarves with crossbows and lots of arrows. The geese should be unable to attack through the fortifcations and the marksdwarves should be able to kill the lot of them with out any injuries.

I may actually go build some blinds.

I haven't been able to find my magma pipe....

You could also try building a ballista or catapult...

IIRC they can fly, making them far harder to keep under control. At least they don't attack dwarves on sight like carps do.

Now you just MUST mod geese to be aggressive to your dwarves.

Could you dig a trench near the river, make it accessible, build a floor over the top of it and then drown them?

As soon as you try to build the roof over them, either your dwarves run away, or the geese run away. Or both.

Unless you mod both dwarves and geese to have no eyes for the duration of the experiment.
Remember that eyeless creatures can still "see" at melee distance, which is one square in every direction, probably up and down too.

I wonder if paving over or magma-ing the river would make them go away, destroy their home and get rid of the water that they enjoy so much. If that doesn't work, I would definitely send a small army of archers after them. I would go so far as to NOT build fortifications first, because there's just so much potential Fun(ny) with sending a swarm of freshly recruited dwarves with crossbows at a swarm of geese with bloodthirstyness, and seeing who would win.

I always have a peasant problem anyway, so losing a few to random acts of hilarity is always a welcome option for me.

Thanks for all of the lovely suggestions guys. I would be far more than will to try any of these were it not for the small complication called "This is my first time playing dig deeper and I figured orcs were push-overs like goblins."

That caused some problems.

I drafted my entire fortress once I realized that they were slaughtering my 15 war dogs. My 47 dwarves only killed one wrestler because the orc axe lord went into a martial trance and butchered 20 of my dwarves. Alone.

I once settled in a site with a river full of geese and carp.   While my dwarves dug into the ground in terror, the geese and carp waged war over ownership of the river.  The geese won.  Dig Deeper geese are nasty.

...I just envisioned miniature great white sharks making full-body leaps out of the river while attacking Donald Duck wielding an axe...  :o

...I really do need to spend less time in Lab...

Speaking of which, how is fire in the new version?
out of personal experience, where a dwarf was set alight by a magmaman, ran up 150 flights of stairs, and divebombed into the booze stockpile, I'd have to say fire is the same as always.
