question on well depth
« on: January 17, 2010, 07:18:59 pm »

I read somewhere (but of course can't find again) that wells must be 3 z-levels deep in order for dwarves to drink from them. If my well is set up like this, will it be usable for siege supply and health care?

view from the side:
Code: [Select]
W   <-- constructed well
_   <-- open space (shows a dark blue 7 on top-down view)
7   <--muddied talc floor filled 7/7 with water

Well depth determines the architectural value of the well.

Whoever told you there was a required minimum depth for wells in terms of z-levels was lying or mistaken. The water can be directly below the level of the well and be tapped by it, or 2 levels below as you have it shown there, or any other number of levels below.*

I am uncertain whether or not the "depth contributes value" idea is correct or not. The only effect I am certain wellshaft depth affects is how long it takes to draw water from the well; deeper wells take longer to use than shallow ones.

*At least, 30 z-level wells work. It is unclear if, say, 100 z-level-deep wells function, but it is suspected that they would.
