Saved game: Which one?
« on: January 19, 2010, 11:06:14 pm »

I know this has probably been asked a bunch of times.  I tried to find this info on the wiki.  And searching in the forum for "saved game" just tells me which haystack to look in.

I have season-save turned on.  And I've have a game that lasted a few seasons until irrepressible FUN happend.  I've savescummed (after Reclaiming, but finding Reclaim mode too buggy to use) and progressed a few seasons since my faux-reclaim.  But now I have trouble figuring out which is my last saved game.

Is there some indicator that shows "this is the one you just saved -- so you can now continue"?  Or do you have to figure it out from sum-402-thru-win-408 and just know it's not a save point where the FUN had already started?

If they were sorted by filesystem timestamp, that would be great, but they don't see to be.

Suggestions?

If you saved on exit, the topmost save should be your most recent. if you Ctrl+Alt+Del'd out, you'll only have the seasonal save and you'll have to look for the newest by date.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I ran into trouble with this kind of thing in my first fort too, until I found something out. Namely, that when you save your game, it saves to the folder you loaded from.

Say you load up the autosave from Spring of 201 and play for a while. When you stop it's halfway through Summer of 202. When you load up the Summer 202 save, you've been set back a while. Why? Because when you exited the game, it saved to the folder you loaded from- in this case, it saved to the Spring 201 folder. It'll still be called Spring 201 even though that save is now Summer 202.

To avoid not knowing which save to use, just use the folder called Region1 (or whatever region it is.) If you need to revert, make a backup copy of the Region1 save, and copy the files from the save you want to revert to into the original Region1 folder.
