[40d16] Crashing when trying to start windowed mode.
« on: December 29, 2009, 11:55:38 am »

I've never been able to run DF in windowed mode, and the newest version has been no exception. I finally had enough and decided to ask for help. I'm running Vista 64bit which probably has a lot to do with the problem. My DF isn't modded or anything, and I've updated my video drivers to the latest version.

What error message does Windows display?  Is there anything in DF's errorlog.txt?

Also, have you tried tweaking the PRINT_MODE parameter in /data/init/init.txt?  That's new to 40d16, and some video cards are picky about which setting you use.

Nothing in DF's errorlog, and windows just displays "dwarfort.exe has stopped working"
How would I go about messing with PRINT_MODE?

/data/init/init.txt

Just open this file, scroll down to PRINT_MODE and it tells you everything.

These settings can have a significant impact on frame rate, especially for people that have slow frame rates on the title screen.  Available modes are STANDARD, PARTIAL:<number>, ACCUM_BUFFER, FRAME_BUFFER and VBO.  The number after PARTIAL refers to how many frames it will redo a printed tile before skipping it, so you might try increasing it a bit if you have flickering when PARTIAL is set.  Please note that any of these combinations might cause frame rates to drop significantly or cause unpleasant side effects like flickering.

No luck, tried all the options, and a bunch of different numbers with the PARTIAL option.

It appears that the Vista theme itself is responsible for the crashing. When I set it to Windows Classic it works just fine windowed. Thanks for the help!
