Yep, also grabbed the game the other day when I saw the sale. The guilds and such should put it in a very different place than Diablo.
You'd think, but in practice I didn't see it. The gameplay is identical, except that the skill tree consists of mostly passive abilities (and they're the only ones worth getting) which you can access even from level one (though you won't have the skill points for them quite yet).
There is no benefit to allowing the other guilds to prosper. You still get a fat sack of loot for destroying them even if you do so at the very beginning of the game, and the longer they stick around the more guards they will get for their crystals and the better gear they will have. Eventually you're slugging through endless stacks of HP to end the damn game, and for what? So you can start a new game.
There is a plot/story, but it's stupid and hackneyed, and really you "win" by beating the other guilds into submission or diplomatically becoming the leader of an alliance of guilds. So why not win ASAP? You get loot, you spend less time beating the other guilds, and you "win".
Buh. What's worse is that I was playing a fighter and I had this huge, "powerful" claymore, the most powerful weapon I could find for my level, and it did like...14 damage. Depends on what you're fighting, right? Well, the guards and other NPCs do similar damage, but they have upwards of THREE HUNDRED hit points. And so do you. So battle with the guilds quickly becomes this: Kill the guild NPCs, start working on their crystal guards, kill the guild NPCS, continue working on crystal guards, kill the guild NPCS, continue working on crystal guards... and so on, with NPCS interrupting every couple of seconds, until finally you're working on the crystal itself. Attack crystal, kill guild npcs, attack crystal, kill guild npcs... It never fucking ends.
I was not impressed.
