Toys

I was wondering, looking through the entity tags... why is there no tag for other toys, like dolls or toy birds or such? I mean, if one was to mod to play as some other race, I don't think elf children will play with mini-forges or toy axes...

Why not have instead of the specific toy tags of now, have [TOY:s:p:m], where s is the singular name, p is the plural name, and m is the sorts of materials it can be made from?

I'm surprised that the mechanic's shoppe doesn't have a "build mechanical toys" task of some kind.

They can make elaborate, self-rewinding/resetting multiple-weapon-traps out of solid stone, but they can't make a windup Carp?

I would imagine those make wonderful practical jokes on people unafraid of heart attacks.

True.

But, you know, toys are Fun. I'd like to see more, in more varieties.

Or, dare I say it, some kind of *use* for them...?

I'd be a lot happier if the kids in my Fortress occasionally played with them.

Maybe whichever toys your children have access to, could have some bearing on their adult, professional lives? Or maybe influence some list of potential moods that dwarf might someday fall under.

Perhaps they might give a happy thought to kids that play with them, and parents that see their kids having fun?

That would be one good use for them, yes.

another idea:
pretty sure its been mentioned before (not in this thead im sure)
allow them to train the skills of dwarven children/babies.
Prehaps they even have their own likings to differnt ones.
E.g.
A toy hammer would train hammer skills...
a toy sword training sword skills...
toy shiled training sheild...
a toy pick training mining...
a toy workshop (extended from a mini-forge which would train metalsmithing n that) would basically train everything.
While there would be other generic crap that didnt train anything but instead made the child more happy.
And allow for some mini games in adventurer mode like with the puzzel box...

I like your idea, silhouette, but on the other hand, they don't make sense to me.

well a dwarf child playign with toys would be basically doing the same thing and adult would do except less complicated and less harmfull.

Kinda like a human child nowdays playing with an easybake oven, it simulates a real oven n that.

And some toys dont really simulate anything and are just for fun (happiness in this case).

Makes sense to me, silhouette.

Maybe children could get skill levels up to Gifted/Talented?
