Less haphazardly, what role does the first dwarf play? It'd be nice to be nonredundant.
And is it permitted to have used any Craft skills for one's equipment prior to the adventure?
Food and water and shelter ignored? Mundane ammunition?

The three main concepts I see are minstrel to record the legend as it transpires(bard), "merchant" and/or treasure hunter who's following the Standard to see what's going to go down and/or influence it and make some money along the way (rogue or expert). Mechanically could be partyface or skillmonkey.

At least, for nonevil characters.

Time frame would be sometime in the afternoon-evening, in the Pacific-Eastern time table.  So far all of my players (except for one) are US players.

There will be no bashing with carts either.  Beyond the, this is fairly serious game, a dwarf trying to pick up a cart and beat people with it...just doesn't seem to work in my mind.

The first dwarf is a paladin, food and water and the like will be used, so make sure you bring some, and no craft skill usage before adventure. 

You certainly could try to use the situation for monetary gain, but just keep in mind that the majority of the party is made up of zealous humans, and a dwarf out to prove himself, so consider yourself as walking on very very thin ice.  But then again if you can pull it off it could turn out to be quite fun/Fun. 

A bard to record the journey would be something else that would be interesting to have, like having Loial from WoT.

How far is it to this ...'lost city?' I guess I'll just use my fungible goods to purchase the rations.

You didn't say whether flaws or traits were permitted.

What do Dwarves think of those 5 gods? Do they have their own, etc?

Savvy, smart merchant deciding to go along with this caravan to fleece some humans of their gold on the way, since they're not Dwarves. Not showing this, of course, you'd never sell anything that way.

Walks into town with the caravan, with a chest strapped to back. Of course a dwarf is not slowed by this.

I am going to have to pass Cobalt.  We have a 5 man party now, so recruitment is largely closed, however if I get a really good character that I like I am open to making an addition to the party.

Dwarves are largely indifferent of humans/humanities gods in general.  The dwarves prefer the mountains and underground, and humans like the above world, so they kind of dont have issues with one another.

 Father Hamilton has been in Elren's Rest, bookkeeping at the Temple of the Gods, for fifteen years. He was forty when the Order sent him to this backwater town, and he had expected to be ordered back at any moment. The order never came. After a while, Hamilton ended up becoming a staple of the village, taking a seat on the village council (as was common for the clergy), preaching the words of Isiel. He was a kind, jovial man, and the villagers grew to enjoy his presence.

In his younger days, Hamilton had jumped at the chance to join the Order of Protection as his father had. Unfortunately, an adolescence of tomfoolery and slacking made him unsuitable for more than a position as a clerk. Despite this, he studied his Goddess frequently, holing himself up in the libraries of the major city where he lived.

It looked like his career was going to take an interesting turn at around age 30, when his abilities as a full-fledged Cleric began to shine. The Order assigned him to various Templar patrols in his home city and the surrounding area. He only saw action a couple times, and in these cases he was ordered to stay back and wait until it was time for him to tend to the wounds. Always a man to be prepared, however, he began practicing with the longsword, the weapon of choice for Isiel, in case the Templars before him ever fell.

After nine years of this, he was sent on what he thought was going to be a very serious mission for the Order. Unfortunately, the caravan he was with was ransacked by Stone Tribes, taking Hamilton by complete surprise and slaughtering most of the Templars and Clerics present. One of the survivors was a brash young nobleman, and it was he who arranged to send Hamilton and the four other survivors off to different corners of the Federation to ensure word never got out that he had cowered in the wagon instead of fought bravely alongside his comrades.

So, at age 40, Hamilton was sent to Elren's Rest, with instructions to 'await the arrival of the permanent Order liaison to this village'. The liaison never came (nor did he ever exist), so Hamilton waited until the age of 55, watching the world grow more and more complacent, all the while languishing and forgetting the Gods.

When he heard tell of this lost city, however, he knew it was time to abandon his orders...
