I had a bunch of questions but the Search function and a bit of patience solved them all. It was a bit disheartening to see that some of my most dearly desired UI abilities only showed up in the DF Suggestions sub-forum, and especially disheartening that catapults don't work the way I had imagined.

But, wishes aside, there were five or six things about my first fort that had me totally confused and with some quality time dedicated to searching, I found all my answers. So instead of posting a question, I'll post thanks: 

1) to the forum denizens for explaining things to each other so well, and
2) to Bay12 for making a free game that has me absolutely riveted even though I bought myself a DS and some games this Christmas.
