Pumping Water

How do I pump out water that is a Z-level bellow my pumps? I am trying to pump out an aquafier so I can get some stone.

I recommend you take a look at the aquifer page on the Dwarf Fortress wiki for some helpful tips on how to break through it.

As for your questions, pumps already take water from a level below, as demonstrated quite prominently on the wiki page for screw pump.

Boy, that Dwarf Fortress wiki sure is a handy resource, isn't it?
