Aquifer fun!
« on: December 13, 2009, 03:10:38 am »

So, I've been trying to follow the image http://dwarffortresswiki.net/images/c/c6/Aquifier_cavein_2level.jpg , but every time I get to the third image and drop the outer ring, it brings a poor dorf with it, and the channeled out section doesn't even get filled. Did they change the way things work in the latest update, or am I really bad at counting?

That method requires two levels of soil above the aquifer to complete.

You're sure you're dropping soil walls instead of soil floors?

Yeah, I have two levels of soil, and I'm dropping the wall right onto the channel. I've rechecked a large number of times.

EDIT: I'm even channeling the last part to drop it from the north to avoid being on the section that falls.

Actually you need three.

Well, Ive managed to save the dorf who cuts the final part of the wall, but it wont fill in the part channeled out from the level below it.

No you don't. Just two.

Right before you drop, 'k' over the ring you're trying to drop and tell me what look mode says when you go down level by level. Does it say,

1. Soil floor
2. Soil wall
3. Open space

Like it should, or something different?

The ring I am dropping stuff into says open space, the ring I am dropping says cavern floor. Black sand if it matters.

Well, on floor -2 its Water 7/7+Cavern Floor
Floor -1 its Open Space
Floor 0 is Cavern Floor
And I have Floor +1

Well, that's your problem then. A floor is not a wall and won't make a wall to block the aquifer. You must not <d>ig out the level you are dropping.

this is wrong:

XXX._____.XXX
XXX.......XXX
XXXAAAAAAAXXX

and this is right

XXX.XXXXX.XXX
XXX.......XXX
XXXAAAAAAAXXX

X = solid rock or soil (should say "black sand wall")
_ = floor. that's where you dug out rock or soil with <d> <d>
. = empty space
A = channeled out aquifer (about to be blocked)

Work from the level above the one you intend to drop.
