light inside. (an adventurer goal, so probably also in the works for Dwarfmode)

Besides wooden/ratweed torches, bitumen braziers and possibly oil lamps:
captured critters in glassjars for illumination (fireflies/glowworms/magmabeasts)

Still, only daylight should stave off cave adaptation (aka agoraphobia?)

Just a wistfull thought.

I think this is planned on the dev list.

Maybe, but I think he's done some innovation there by suggesting the captured creatures as light sources. Imagine:

You enter a colossal cavern. Interspersed evenly around are ferociously bright pinpricks of light, suspended on pillars, lighting up the darkness. Upon asking, you are informed that these light sources are actually magmamen, held capture inside steel cages.

Yeah, I knew torches and such were planned. (scanned the devnotes yesterday)

just suggesting some functional use for glassware and captured critters besides merchandise and keeping nobles happy.
I figure a terrarium filled with fireflies would give light, but a jar has better aestetics.

Possibly number of critters and size/luminescence determines the size of lighted area.

There aren't excessively many details in the dev notes. (lots of notes though!)

That'd make fire snake vermin attractive. I like.

Lighting your fortress with living beings?  Cue Ignus's theme song.

If you want a theme song, I suggest thus:

Go to a town with a fatcat magistrate and poverty-stricken workers. Spend a few days in the town so that everyone knows who you are. Steal all the magistrate's money and one of his planes. Fly over the town and drop all the money in town square. Come back a few years later and you should find yourself a folk hero, complete a giant statue of yourself in town square and your own theme song.

Cookie for reference.

Insert witty reference about Jaynestown here.

Unfortunately I can't think of anything appropriate, gorram memory of mine.

hehe, I'd like that. With Visualization incorporated it should be more incentive to build windows.

suggestion 2 :  use minerals/gems/sands to stain glass pretty colours.
suggestion 2b: craftmanship-stained glass leadbars+coloured glass -> +Well-crafted stained glass window with an image in, red and green glass, of a dwarf looking stern upon a vermin, the vermin looks insulted+

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..
