Stockpile priorities/emergency stockpiles
« on: January 20, 2008, 11:02:00 am »

The take from a stockpile option doesn't work for me, as multiple stockpiles are not able to take from one central stockpile (only the other way around). As soon as I make another stockpile take from the central one, the first one is unlisted.
So it would be nice to either change this behaviour, or have an option that let's you designate a stockpile as "emergency" stockpile, so dwarves will only take from them if it's content is not available anywhere else.

You know, I tried to set up small booze stockpiles in each jail cell, but they got regularly emptied by thirsty dwarves that happened to be close to them.

It would also be nice to have stockpile priorities, so they would fill the one with highest priority first, and only fill the next, if the first one is full.

Yup this would be nice, but in the mean time you can do something (for the jail problem anyway) by makeing one stock pile then using the (x) remove stockpile command to take away the bits you don't want until you only have one square next to each chain/bed, then when you tell it to 'take from' it will treat all the small squares as a single stockpile  :)

You can also partly work around the "no multiple stockpiles taking from one" issue by making several central stockpiles and producing enough to at least partly fill them all (it may be helpful to line them up at equal distances from the resource).

I've done this before and it works (with a little fiddling).

You may also want to try designating the jail, or at least the entry hall to it,  as a restricted traffic area.  By making it more "expensive" to move to you can encourage thirsty dwarves to go elsewhere.  You should also try putting a small stockpile just outside the jail as a diversion from the in-cell stocks.
