For a one time profit I suppose, but if you use the breeding method you'll have a renewable supply of cash.

Then again, if they are the same sex...
Yeah. Females.
I'll be in my bunk.

Hint:
That is an alternative method of gaining many a dwarfbuck.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

You dont need to catch a merman to impregnate them thanks to sporereproduction.

1. Catch mermaids
2. wait till they get pregnant by magically sensing a merman swimming past youre fortress
3. keep the first male offspring
4. mermaidincest
5. build a mermaid-kz
6. PROFIT!!! (and a place in hell for you)
Only problem is that step 3 will take 12 years :P

Still, I do suggest waiting for a male to enter the map. Kentucky fried mermaid is just too good to pass up ;D

Also, we wouldnt want to go without that place in hell, I mean, what if they DONT have a place for you??

Ok,ok... What if you captured them and discover a male? If that happens and you prepare yourself you should be in business.
Too many efforts. My Legendary+3 metalcrafter f%cks those mermaids.
Sigh, someone FINALLY gets the perfect chance to farm mermaids, and they completely fail to take advantage of the situation...

Only now do I notice what an vulgarly ironic turn of phrase that was.

The first two mermaids would be permapregnant after the first time so youre industry would already run at this point, keeping a male is just to make sure that any other females you keep to expand youre industry will get pregnant immediatly without having to wait for a free male to pass by.

Then we would have to find a magmapipe in heaven and flood everything with magma. I dont want to spend eternity without a pictoresc magmalake and burning elfs.

On this subject it would be very interesting if Genderless creatures could have associated Genders

For example in the Viva Pinata show... The Pinatas actually have no genders. Yes they often associate themselves as male or female.

Autobots are in an odd situation... Though yes they are in a similar situation in terms of being truely genderless but still associating themselves with genders.

So if all Mermaids are female then they are effectively asexual, yet OTHER creatures associate them with being female.

...I think the bug is why they're not going to enter the map FROM the ocean. Somehow, you got them as a 'ninja spawn' away from the edge.

On this subject it would be very interesting if sexless creatures could have associated Genders

For example in the Viva Pinata show... The Pinatas actually have no sexes. Yes they often associate themselves as male or female.

Autobots are in an odd situation... Though yes they are in a similar situation in terms of being truely sexless but still associating themselves with genders.

So if all Mermaids are female then they are effectively asexual, yet OTHER creatures associate them with being female.
If you're going to talk about the different divides, it's conventional to call the biological part sex and the mental part gender. Using both for one is fairly confusing without qualifiers.

Also, asexual creatures are different from, say, parthenogenetic ones.

Also, checked raws, merpeople are specstringed in both cases (like cows/bulls) and both should show up (unlike, say, harpies, which ARE purely female)

1.) Capture Females
2.) Wait for wild male to impregnate them (via spores)
3.) Keep first male born.
4.) Wincest!
5.) ??????
6.) Profit

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.
