1440x900 Resolution-Help?
« on: November 30, 2009, 10:10:36 pm »

This may be in the wrong category, feel free to move this topic if it is.

Anyway, I'm a noob, and the Wiki just makes my brain hurt after staring at the meaningless instructions regarding resoltions and tilesets and such.
I have a 17-inch iMac G5 and it would be great if I could play DF to the fullest of this golden oldie's graphics power.

So...
-Do I need a specific tileset to fit a widescreen
-What text should I monkey with in the init.txt file
-Why did my poor Woodcutter(s) die and have blood spatter all into the river when he (tried to) chop(ped) a tree on the bank

Thanks,
~Squiggly

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress, though your third point implies you've already been baptized.

No, you don't need any specific tileset.  Tilesets act independent of platform, so anything is fine.  Most people seem to like Mayday or Dystopian Rhetoric.

As for messing with the init, the wiki is your friend.  Look under 'init.txt' and 'tilesets'.  Come back and ask specific questions if you still don't get it(the Modding board is good for that).

Your woodcutter was probably horribly murdered by carp or some other fish.  Carp are basically freshwater sharks in DF and will gladly murder entire fortresses.  They HAVE been known to whip out the entire military before if you plan poorly.  See the wiki entry on 'carp' if you don't mind getting ASCII nightmares for awhile.

In the init file, it asks for how many columns and rows you want, if you are using version 40d. My personal recommendation is to use 40d16, which means that you can leave the init file alone in regards to graphics.

All right, here are my problems with the game and its precious init file:
  • When I set the Resolution to 1400x900 in the init.txt file, it gives me a black screen that plays the sweet guitar, and is unplayable(no graphics, just black)
  • When I set the Resolution to 1440x900 and turn on BlackSpace, I get a tiny 640x300 screen in the top left corner of my screen, the rest of the screen being black.

So, did you even read what I put?

If you are using 40d, you have to set how many columns and rows there are. divide your resolution by the tile size used, and that will be your columns and rows. Or, get 40d16 and don't worry about it.

Sorry, I was confused by the stray d next to 40, but I get it. I'll try downloading 40d16.

I use 1440x900 as well, with Mike Mayday's graphics mod, windowed.
How to change the size:
Go to \data\init
Open init.txt
Play around with graphics settings until you're happy.

I play window mode in an almost fullscreen 1280x800 window, using an older version (DFG 18-40d11) ... this may help:
[GRAPHICS:YES]
[GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDX:1280]
[GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDY:800]
[GRAPHICS_FONT:maydayMIX.png]
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENX:1280]
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENY:1024]
[GRAPHICS_FULLFONT:maydayMIX.png]
[GRAPHICS_BLACK_SPACE:YES]

The latest version (d16) will re-size the window on the fly.

download the latest version here http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=40349.0

You can use your current save with this version. Just move the folder from your current save folder to the new save folder.
