It's a myth that they'll go try to melee if they have weapons skill. This is normal behavior, they'll do it if their only military skill is marskdwarf just as often as if they're also a legendary wrestler and hammerdwarf. The reason they charge in is they're set to chase enemies in the squad menu. Remove that and they'll stay back until the enemy is one or two squares away, which is great for things like marksdwarf nests with bolt stockpiles.

The chase enemies range is about 6 tiles or so. You could do something such as build a moat 6 tiles wide, and your crossbow dwarves will never melee.

However if the dwarf is legendary in wrestling and shield using they are extremely formidable even in melee with a crossbow. Give them legendary in hammers as well, and they're probably more lethal in melee than at range. After all, punting goblins with a hammer doesn't run into any ammo problems, whereas the machinegunners will eventually have to reload.

As long as they have armor they should be fine.  I think serious injury mostly only occurs when they are tired or over exerted so just keep an eye on them.  I once had 3 dorfs wrestling some ogre thing for like a month (a squad took turns).  Everyone was fine except a recruit with a broken arm, and then the ogre got over exerted and started to get moderate injuries but even then nothing serious until it was unconcious.

edit: OOPS LIGHT GREY BRAIN INJURIES DO COUNT AS BRAIN INJURIES.  No wonder half my army just goofs off all the time.  Don't do it without armor and shields  :'(

question: can those dorfs still fight or are they useless now?

They can fight but they will not spar (i.e. train melee with each other). Your best bet is to undraft them or make them train with crossbows.

All dwarves with brain damage or bruised spines are not exempt from duty. Nope. They get put on the front lines with everyone else.

If they die, they die. Otherwise they complete their training by sparring against goblins and megabeasts.

Among a mixed group of marksdwarves, the legendaries will empty their quivers first.

If you train them in wrestling/hammering, they'll gain even more agility(bolt firing speed) but have a much better chance in close combat.
