I don't see how. If the drainage holes(1s) are covered by grates, and the grates in between(G) aren't passable, where exactly is the pet going to go?

Remember that pets and dwarves can path diagonally, so you'd have to tweak that design to make it work.
Please point the tile that won't work as you think?
Well, it WOULD work to some extent, but it's not guaranteed. A clever/lucky pet might diagonal across the drainage before the water can push it away.
Hey, they're corpses already at the time of drainage.

There's something in place of '1' on the scheme (doors or floodgates, as i wrote), not just empty spaces.
 - drainage (floodgates or doors leading out to drainage)

But if there's something there, can't they just diagonal past the pet-impassable door by sidestepping it?

The entire tunnel section is going to be filled with water. It doesn't matter if the pets move along the tunnel in the meantime.

Liaisons and children will sometimes wander wherever, and I don't know if a dead-end hallway will pique their curiosity or if a restricted-traffic hall will dissuade them. May be a problem occasionally. But really, the walls look good with a little red paint.
