Amount of tiles in large world map
« on: November 13, 2009, 11:23:00 pm »

Got bored and so here is a fun fact for all of you who don't know. In the largest map on dwarf fortress, including z-levels, a world map has 15582914150400 (15 trillion) tiles.

Have fun exploring!

Wow. that's a lot of tiles.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

If DF didn't use deterministic procedural mechanics to remember what each tile was, it'd take over 14 tebibytes (terabytes on the 1024 scale) per byte per tile to store on your hard drive.

Incredibly slow; it would have to find each tile i those 14 terabytes; no mean feat.

In terms of area (not counting multi-z) it's about as big as that other DF, Daggerfall.

Imagine your adventurer has no skills and is lugging around a hundred anvils, with one severed leg.

About that fast.
