Extra civs in civ screen
« on: November 27, 2009, 12:53:41 am »

I've noticed my latest fortress has three extra civilizations besides those that I normally trade or fight with.  Two of the extras are human, the other is goblin.

In the past, I've been attacked by goblin packs that were lead by humans, so I figured this was a big clue.  After extensive browsing through world history, I did find that some of the humans who attacked me were kidnapped from the extra human civs.  I guess on this point, can I just get a confirmation from someone that this is the way it works?

As for the extra goblin civ, I have no idea.  Do goblins snatch goblin babies from other goblin nations?  That one is going to be difficult to track down...

Just means you're near another goblin civilization. They'll all operate as normal civilizations too. They're not really 'extra'. In a double goblin fort. I ended with two goblin sieges a year, and six ambushes. One civilization had a lot of stolen humans, and the other was mostly goblins. The one with humans also was larger so sent more numbers at me. The human civ's if nice, will sometimes alternate trading years. You'll get one set of humans one summer, the other city the next. If you war against one, you can still be friends with the other. As for snatching, I am sure, if it's an enemy or no peace, they'll all kidnap from eachother happily. Unless somewhere a goblin on goblin is somehow not eligable to happen.

Ooh, how interesting.

Now you can trade and kill the humans with almost no consequence.

Just make sure to check what they both have to offer from the diplomat before starting a war. :P

Now, what happens when you see two dwarf civs? Can you go to war with one of them?

If it were possible, I should have three dwarf civs on my list.  Histories map clearly shows three neighboring dwarf civs overlapping each other... then again, I am on the outskirts of the border, so I guess there's one that I'm clearly much closer to.  Maybe as an experiment I'll try embarking right between them all.

History also shows that in seven years, I have only received trade from The Confederacies of Targeting - so, no, they aren't swapping back and forth.  I haven't looked at the map to see where these 'extra' civs are and if they are truly close enough to be considered connected to me.

How are civ connections determined?  It can't be simply if you can draw a line between civs without interrupting it by sea, my world has one large land mass that connects every civ.

A mod is needed to make the dwarves trade with you if you play as any other civ, perhaps this is the same thing causing  "other" dwarves (other than your parent civ) not to trade with you normally?

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I forgot to say before: I actually do have two civilizations of my race listed on my civ screen. So I know it is possible and have brought it about.

I did reclaim my fort, which was started by the other civ. Maybe that was the reason.

Also, the only modding required is the addition of progress triggers (just copy the ones the humans have or something). This takes effect without a world gen.

My first successful fort, Towerclouted, had an extra human civ and an extra dwarven civ listed. Neither ever engaged in any sort of trading, though later browsing through Legends mode revealed that the Goblin civ had kidnapped several dwarves and humans from those civs, and those prisoners later grew up to be warriors that led siege squads against my fort.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Dwarves of other civilizations won't really interact, or cause war. Others are chances and you can see actually what areas will have what civilizations by in legends? You can see spheres of influence and where city influences intersect you can get those multiples.

other nearby civs trading and interacting with your fort could get interesting. imagine discovering Adamantium and having two civs going to war over it.
