My leader has a quality.

'He prefers that others handle the leadership roles.' I laughed when I saw it. What did my dwarves do, draw straws?
"Okay, who wants to be the leader? ... No one? Draw straws."

Anymore I give someone leader/trader skills before embarking. Sometimes, looking at all the personality traits, it's rather hard to decide which of these seven losers is gonna be in charge. (And yes, "prefers that others handle the leadership roles" = instant disqualification.)

I try for the one with the least difficult material/item preferences and if possible the "likes helping others," then I try to let them socialize as much as possible so they keep the job (the abundant free time often means they end up being the medic, so they may as well get happy thoughts from it).

Could this be because you use the same embark profile each time, and the dwarf with Appraiser, Judge of Intent etc. is always the first?

Normally it's my trader who becomes the first mayor in forts where I never let anyone idle.
