Marksdwarves and Shields
« on: November 22, 2009, 05:26:08 pm »

Can marksdwarves use shields?  I had always assumed that they can't, but it would be silly in real life, and because of the little dagger mark on the wiki Weapon page.  Slink says otherwise, and I would love for her to be right.

Just to be clear, the question isn't whether a dwarf can hold a crossbow and shield at the same time.  The question is whether he can USE both the crossbow and shield at the same time.  And there might even be a distinction between using the crossbow as a missile weapon vs melee weapon.

My vague recollection is that crossbow dwarves can use a shield, but it reduces their ammo capacity to just what they can carry in their quivers -- normally they carry their quiver ammo and some ammo in their spare hand. It's been awhile since this topic came up though, and I haven't formally tested it myself.

That's what I heard, but I never actually tested it myself. They will use crossbows (as ranged weapon) and shields at the same time, but a shield prevents them carrying a quiver.

I can confirm however, that bucklers don't prevent the carrying of quivers. My marksdwarves all have bucklers, armor, a quiver and a crossbow which they use as intended (ranged, not as a club)

Shield don't prevent wearing a quiver either. They do prevent a dwarf from carrying two stack of ammo tough.
