What happens if a chained creature falls off a cliff?

When a chained creature is standing on a bridge, they leave the chain behind when it flings them, but are still assigned to it. I presume the same is true if they fall off a cliff.*

* Unless they only fall one z-level, in which case they will still be attached to the chain.

Chains appear to act more like mind-control devices than restraints.  They stop an attached creature from pathing more than one tile away from the chain, but don't seem to do anything to restrain it from falling, being pushed, or flung away.
