Bridge-apult into a cistern or magma trap?
« on: November 19, 2009, 09:36:50 pm »

Could you set up a death trap where something is loaded onto a bridge, and the bridge flings them through a one-way ramp into a cistern of magma? If creatures don't fling, I'd be fine with using caged creatures.

See http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=42111.0 for the physics of bridge-flinging.

The answer is yes, but the direction a creature is thrown by a bridge is random.  And sometimes they aren't thrown at all and you have to fire the bridge repeatedly.  And I'm not sure what you mean by 'one-way ramp'.

I know it's random, but I was thinking of a chamber with a lockable door to pit the creature. I'm talking about the ramp you can go up, but can't go down.

The up-only ramp is building a ramp underneath a floor, I think (used to think it was the other way around, someone on here corrected me though). Theoretically, yes, but it'd be a pain to get it directly underneath your one-way route. I'm sure there IS a way, though, given enough time to think about it.

Actually, it's simple. Build a chamber 2 z-levels deep. Pit the creatures from a lockable door on the second layer. The bridge flings the creatures up, and eventually it will fling the creature 3 z-levels. This means it will land on the top side of the one way ramp, burning the creature.
Do flying creatures pass through hatches? If so, then I could just place a hatch, and the creature would fly through, landing in the cistern.

Not sure about hatches-- I could see that working with one-way ramps, though.

The problem is (I forgot about this point earlier), creatures aren't thrown upwards, only objects are. Maybe a wooden cage with a creature in it?

Oh? Well, in that case I'll have to expirement. Do items faze through buildings like creatures when thrown?
