"Tracker" skills?
« on: November 19, 2009, 09:58:15 am »

My king just showed up today. His consort his a "Great Tracker". I never heard of that skill before, and the wiki don't have anything about that... Can you help me?

Wierd. I did have a liason who had a skill show up as Great UNKNOWN in Dwarf Therapist (among bieng a former hammerdwarf and having some skill in most of the farming category labors). If you have DT,  maybe see what skills show up and check the legends.

Maybe its a relic from previous versions or even 2D version. You do have the 40D or 40D## right?

EDIT: Oh yea, more importantly, are you using any mods?

Vanilla DF or modded though? I think the skillsets are hardcoded however.....

Yeah they're hardcoded.
Tracking is used in hunting IIRC.

Its usually called ambusher skill though (normally I think?) and I haven't seen any 'tracker' skill myself.

Check out the legends for that dwarf, maybe she was a hunter/ranger for a while.

She also is a Great Tanner. I'll go and check the legend.

P.S. I just remarked that both her and her husbands killed one dwarf in 99. Do they have Tantrum spirals during world gen?

It could have been a Goblin POW dwarf that they killed.

Okay, she did wander the wild for roughly 115 years. Maybe that's it. However, I never saw that skill before, whether in Adventure or Fortress mode.

Could be a bug, code that Toady thought he had disabled that was actually just rare. Happens sometimes when a programmer removes the commands that trigger old code instead of commenting it out. Also could be code in the world gen acting up. Or it could be that there's actually a Tracking skill, though I thought Ambushing was what was used for.

According to the Wiki, Tracker shows up in a string dump. It means that somewhere in the game is a string (or sentence, for the non-computer people here) that holds "Tracker". Supports the theory that it's a bug, some code that Toady thought wasn't working that actually does. Since Tracking has no labor associated, I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably something that was/is intended for adventure mode or for fortresses to root out stealthed enemies.

It's possible your game file is itself corrupt. If a few bits got switched in the world gen code it could be generating things that aren't technically supposed to happen. I'd post it in bug reports and leave it at that.
