Things that have surprised you
« on: November 19, 2009, 01:57:17 pm »

So I figured I'd build a town made out of destructible houses and try out different designs to see what works best.

I wanted wild building destroyers and magma, also tropical .. so I searched for a while and found all this - at an elven forest retreat. I started the fortress and sure enough there were elephants there. Also unicorns.

Elephants aren't the threat they used to be but I figure if they're the common animals - the uncommon predators might very well destroy me completely. ... but then something happened that left me staring.

ALL ELVES STARTED FIGHTING! they shot eachother, speared eachother and chopped limbs off with wooden swords. I couldn't tell what was going on, a druid tried to crawl from a peasant and a guard who chopped him. He got enraged and killed both before crawling off away from a few others who kicked a guard lying down.

It was complete chaos and in the end I had 77 elf corpses in my fortress and about 12 living ones.

My first big fortress (read, second, maybe third), everything was going well, the peasants were hauling, the guards were sparring, the lye and soap makers were building my 3 z-level wall... but...

I thought my dwarves could use a nice well in their underground meeting hall, 10 z-levels down. Too bad water pressure thought otherwise.

Truly, a wise lesson.

I just had to post about this, but I didn't want to open up a new thread, thanks.

Anyway, one day a merchant visited and I didn't have anything to trade, so I ignored them until they left.

Apparently they were pissed because when they left, they proceeded to punch a pack of 2-hump camels to death, chasing them down to the very last one, and then finally leaving.

Not quite as drastic as the others, but at one point I was q-scanning through a row of bedrooms to see who owned them, and, well... "Urist McRandomdwarf1, Shorast McRandomdwarf2... ??? 'Pumps from the North'?".

That would be as deadly to the wielder as to anyone else!  You'd sever your own arm at the first swing!  It's perfect!

I had a fortress of totally naked Dwarves, on account of them standing out in the rain all the time and me making no new clothing.  I decided they should all have some socks and shoes, so first I made a pile of silk socks.  All the adults ran to get some.  They all put two socks on their right foot and one on their left, until the socks were gone, so there were not enough for everyone.  I made some more, figuring that I could go through and make them dump the extra socks after everyone got their share.  Then I started making some leather shoes.  Now I have some Dwarves wearing a pair of socks and only one shoe, on the right foot.  I know they show up to the fortress wearing two socks and two shoes, so I don't know why they won't put two shoes on now.  It presents me with a very strange image, to have Dwarves running around wearing a pair of socks but only one shoe.  I think things were better when they were totally naked.   :D

Kobolds: "Just another kobold thief - oh crap, my drafted recruit just got neck-stabbed!"

Orcs: "OH ARMOK THOSE THINGS HAVE TRAPAVOID".

My first megabeast: "Damn that thing is hard to kill - wait, did it just blunder into a cage trap and die? Awesome!"

Sigh... this surprised me a bit as well. I was hoping for an epic battle. I suppose that's what the tougher mods are for.

I was floored when I found out that you can sell artifacts after a reclaim.
