Looking for suggestions...
« on: November 20, 2009, 05:57:57 pm »

...on what to do with a stockpile of 250-300 gold bars / blocks / ore that I haven't much use for, making a fair living off of steel and platinum, so I just want to use the gold to make something ridiculous and huge. My main idea is just a simple gold spire reaching up to the sky and capped with platinum built in the courtyard of my fortress as testimony to my dwarve's craftmanship, but it's a little vanilla, so I want to consider the unusual as well before I set my masons to work.

Build a skull using the gold.
Bonus points if you have magma falling from the eyes.

Also, turn the inside of the skull into an execution chamber.
Super bonus points if the executions are magma based.

That better be a whole lot of bonus points because there isn't any magma in the area. Little ambitious, but I like it, more of this.

Build a golden C(alf).

Hmm, I might go a little simpler, but some form of golden diety for my dwarves to worship is certainly a good idea.

Build a god statue standing over your fort entrance. In his out stretched hand he has a thunderbolt, MADE OF PURE GOLD!!!

Have it so that the hand will let go of the the thunderbolt some how and crush your enemies when they invade :D

The walls surrounding my courtyard have towers on either side of the gateway, I could possibly have a colossus straddling the entryway, a foot planted on each tower. I suspect it may take a lot more gold though, perhaps test first with just a golden mcdonalds style arch over the entryway, would I be able to ramp this to create the curve? I'm figuring it isn't possible on built walls.

My first mega project was using a similar amount of gold blocks

Phallic Acid, named after a niche heavy metal band with no website, was dedicated to almost exactly what it sounds like: a giant, golden phallus with iron interior, that would continually pump magma out of the top.

I would have pictures, but in an effort to keep the magma contained, I tried to have it supported by grates. Boy was I wrong.
Three dwarves (two legendary blacksmiths / metalcrafters) and one dwarf baby were lost in The Great Phallus Disaster of 410. I like to think the dwarves now worship their combined molten, amorphous forms as some sort of venerable vengeance spirit that haunts the fortress.

nonononono! Make the statue out of multicolored blocks. White or brown ones for skin, black for hair and beard, purple for clothes, other colors for ornaments, and a hand holding a massive golden thunder bolt that can be dropped upon the heathens attacking your fort!!!

A huge statue of a two-headed eagle. [This may require importing gold]

...Yes, I'm a 40K nerd.

A suggestion based on this: have a huge golden colossus with a giant golden phallus with an iron interior pouring magma and being dropped on invading hordes.
