A new type of bait
« on: March 17, 2008, 12:35:00 pm »

Just a very simple suggestion, would it be possible to bait animal trap using useless creature chunks instead of the precious meat? I'd like to use some of those goblin(or dwarf) pieces laying around to bait my animal traps  :D

Soapworkers and Kittens sound better, but I'd second this: anything that would bite sirloin would bite a good size chunk of nostril.

I actually do use animals as bait for non- missle goblins and unwelcome guests. Midway between my gates and the edge I build a trap like this:
code:

.........
.^^^^^^^.
.^^^^^^^.
.^^   ^^.
.^^ C ^^.
.^^   ^^.
.^^^^^^^.
.^^^^^^^.
.........

. = open ground
^ = cage trap
C = chain/rope

I drew it round, and double deep, but usually it is built into a cliff so only one side is trapped. I start with 1 deep and add over time. I've been planning to experiment with having the animal not visible without turning a corner, so that it isn't arrow bait.

Thats pretty cool   :D Bonus points if you chain a noble in the middle heh...

hehe I've been toying with the notion of setting up my jails in them. Not quite the same effect, but imagine the way the goblins/elves/humans would look at you if the saw a dwarf chained outside in a pile of vomit. Dwarves of course, would understand the lucky bastard avoided the Hammerer.

My current "half the edges lead here" trap:

code:

             ^..
         |||^^.. -> Fort
         ||| ^..
        ||||
    ||||||||
    ||||||||
||v||||||||||
||vvvvvvvvvvv
|||||||||||||

     |
     V
West and South edges

Approximately.  v = downward ramp, | = 4 upright iron spikes (or 3 upright steel spikes).  Obviously the ones below the v's are on the lower level.  I have 53 of them set up.  The traps upper right are a single presure plate tied to all 53 spikes, the other 3 are 3 x steel serrated disk traps.
