Caravan spiral ramp.
« on: July 14, 2009, 04:06:25 am »

This is something I designed for getting the caravan down into my fort (across a bridge and down a wooden tower into the ground):

Code: [Select]
Key:
O - | + wall
. floor
  space
^ upward ramp
v open space above upward ramp

Bottom level:
------+
f.....|
o.....|
r..^O.|
t..^|.|
<..^|.|
----+-+

Level 1, step 1:
+-----+
|.....|
|..O--+
|..v..|
|..v..|
|..v..|
+-----+

Level 1, step 2:
+-----+
|.....|
|..O--+
|..^^^|
|..v..|
|..v..|
+-----+

Continue rotating 90 degrees for each level.

This is the smallest I can make a spiral ramp tower. It seems like the upward ramp closest to the center would block the caravan from passing through, but it doesn't. Anyone know why?

To my estimation, probably because ramps behave a little oddly (c.f. the "one way ramp") with things built on top of them, i.e. the next Z-level up.  Including other ramps, it seems?

Not to mention that wagons are buggy as well.

Why bother making your ramp small instead of grand?

And this works when the caravans show?

Yeah, you'd think it'd fail - it might still, sometimes ramps work at first and then fail later.  And it might only let the wagon down, but not back up - ramps can do that too.

But bottom line - I have no idea.  Ramps are weird.

Secret back entrance? Also, this one fits nicely into a 5x5 room, for matching up with other rooms in the fort.

11x11 would fit your 5x5 rooms with the + walls in between 4 of em knocked down. 6x6 quarter turns would fit in that.

And a back entrance needs to be a rather long path to keep anyone from using it normally (or physically close it off but what good is that as a back door?) so you'd want a bigger spiral anyway.

Dammit, now i wanna make a spiral caravan hole :P

I use 7X7 rooms as my standard, so size isn't an issue. 3-wide with a central pillar works fine for me.

Oh yeah? Well I use 11x11, which can beautifully be divided into 5x5s, 3x3s (for workshops) and 2x2s (for bedrooms).
Sometimes, though, I do consider trying to break out of the OCDness... but it just works so well.

Do you need to dig in the order specified by "step 1" and "step 2"?

In order to dig this into the earth, it'd be easier to do step 2 first, then step 1.  But does this mess up the ability of the caravan to use the step-1-up and the step-2-down simultaneously?

I use 11x11 for workshops, storerooms, barracks, and dining rooms.
It's just easier to go enter, shift+left/right, shift+up/down, enter.

If this is the case, you can make a smaller one like this:

Level 1
WWWWWW
E+ ^WWW
E+ ^WWW
E+ ^WWW
WWWWWW

Level 2 (first looks like this)
WWWWWW
WWv ++W
WWv ++W
WWv ++W
WWWWWW
Then:
WWWWWW
WW^ ++W
WW^ ++W
WW^ ++W
WWWWWW
Maybe the caravans don't even need the two floor tiles, and you can just build a "ladder".
Edit: E is the entrance

I think I drew the diagram as steps for constructing, not for digging, where steps 1 and 2 can be done at the same time, although the ramp farthest from the wall would have to be constructed anyways.

I did something similar here:

http://mkv25.net/dfma/poi-7529-secondaryentrance

Go 1 z-level down from this poi and you'll see it.
