2) Add 'reflecting pools' through the center of the corridors.  Aside from looking pretty, this could make it easier to string together your city's waterworks, providing for possible water-based defenses.
Like miniature canals? That does sound good.
Something like that.  My idea was that, if you wanted an interior drowning chamber for pesky goblins or nobles, or if you wanted a decorative pool inside one of the larger chambers, you could string theentire thing together in a single, massive set of waterworks spanning the entirety of the fortress - like a primitive Dwarven sanitation system.

Just remember to use pumps between Z-levels to normalize water pressure if you plan to do this on more than one floor.
