Squad grouping

Whenever a member of any particular military squad gets injured (or has to eat, or drink, etc), generally the rest of the squad will follow them even whilst they're supposed to be on duty, is there any way I can stop this grouping without removing the soldier in question from the squad?

I would fill it with Magma if there was any on my map... there isn't, so I'm filling it with Rhesus Macaques.

Don't use squads.

They're more trouble than they're worth.

Try shifting who commands who around. Make certain that all the soldiers in the squad are directly under the leadership of the squadron commander, and not under any sub-commanders. That should partially solve your problem.

Members of a squad follow the squad leader everywhere. This means that when the squad leader is hungry, the squad follows him. When he's thirsty, they follow him. When he's hurt, they stand by his bed. This greatly reduces their sparring time. Squads aren't worth it.

So I should issue commands for every single dwarf in my military? Damn, I've got like 45 dwarves in active service, it takes long enough to organise the six squads I have them all grouped in, is splitting them all up really my best option?

If you want everything in your military to work perfectly, splitting them all up really is the best option.

Also, you don't need forty five soldiers. I typically do fine with ten.

Yeah, I know, but it looks so much better to have large groups of military dwarves patrolling my walls rather than have dozens of dwarves with useless professions hauling rock. Besides, I'm slaughtering the biggest orc sieges possible without breaking a sweat, I like my army :)

After reading this thread, I suppose I'll have to restrict my use of squads to on-duty or non-squad. I like to use squads to organize on-duty dwarves because it makes orders simpler. I just form the squads and say "Hammers here, marksdwarves here, and swords here". Simplifies things significantly over "you here, you there, you here, you there" and so on to insanity. Also helps keep my champions away from the recruits.

I tend to have five-man or so squads if I have 40 or more military.  That way, even if some of the squad leaders are eating/drinking/resting, I still have enough that aren't that things get done.

I also designate my squad leaders with titles other than Champion, so on the Unit list I can see if any are resting injuries, and designate another squad leader in their place.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.
