magma forge/smelters and dangerous terrain
« on: October 31, 2009, 09:55:38 am »

I've never bothered with magma forges and smelters before but this boring afternoon I figured I'd give it a go. I've channeled three tiles out so the whole left side of my forge hangs over the magma pit. Now's the problem, the Dwarves just see it as dangerous terrain and bail out on the job. They keep doing this and it's making it impossible to build any magma constructions.

You know the workshop needs to be built above the magma, right? Not on the same level. You should have two levels that look something like this:
Code: [Select]
#########
#WWW.WWW#  Upper level
#WWW.WWW#  #: wall
#WWW.WWW#  .: floor
#...X...#  W: workshop
#WWW.WWW#  X: up/down staircase
#WWW.WWW#
####.####

#########
#~~~~~~~#  Lower level
#~#####~#  ~: magma at least 4/7 deep
#~#...#~#  <: up staircase
#~#.<.#~#  Magma source is to the south
#~#...#~#
#~#####~#
#~~~~~~~#
####~####
####~####
At least, this is how I generally end up setting up my magma workshops. The hole in the middle of the magma tunnel loop is for storage (generally I have a bigger, 5x5 workshop setup, so there's more room for storage than a tiny 3x3 hole).

Edit: fixed BBCode.

Take the magma to the workshops, not the workshops to the magma.

The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Are you sure you're trying to build a magma forge and not just a normal one? They are two separate buildings.

Only the far left side, 1/3, not the left 2/3 (6 tiles) of the workshop, right? (Not sure if you could even place that.)

You only need 1 of the 8 outside tiles over magma.

You can't place magma workshops if the center tile isn't walkable; you can't place non-magma workshops if any tile is not walkable.

Apologies for the late reply. Yeah I had three tiles channeled just to be sure, rather than one. I guess they thought the workshop would just slide into the magma beneath. Thanks ;D
