I have a dilemma.
« on: October 29, 2009, 11:26:07 am »

Long story short I embarked with no woodcutter because the biome said no wood, and Iheard that you can get wood from from plump helmets is it true? If so how? Thanks in advance.

You can't. You can get wood from tower-caps, which grow on muddy ground after you discover an underground pool or river.

If you have no woodcutter but still have an axe, you can just train someone up. If you have no axe, buy one off the dwarven caravan.
If you have no axe and didn't bring any wood, you're stuck waiting until the dwarves arrive so you can buy more.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Where did you get that info from???? Whoever told you that is seriously misinformed or you completely misunderstood.

Its entirely possible that you are confusing plump helmets for tower caps (which are both fungi in any case).

Look at the wiki for tower cap farming (TCs are used as wood) and I hope you have either a UG river or UG pool because otherwise you will have to import all the wood.

Still, if the map has no wood, it is a wise move to embark without a woodcutter to free up points.

 That is not true.

What you probably heard is that if you have access to a cave pool or cave river, tower cap mushrooms will grow on muddied ground. However, these also need an axe to harvest just like trees.

You can buy wood and likely an axe from trade caravans.
You can deconstruct your wagon to get 3 wood.
Be very conservative with your wood until you get that axe.
You can forge an axe using a smelter + forge (if you have metal ore).
A magma smelter + magma forge allows you to do this without using wood.
A smelter + forge + woodburner can be used to make an axe from the wood of your wagon.

Be aware that if you don't have any wood logs available for usage, caravans will tend to bring a truckload of them for you to buy at only 3 dwarfbucks a piece (unless you requested them from the liaison during the previous year). And by available for usage, I mean not forbidden or tied up in buildings/constructions (such as axles), which means that all you have to do is (d)-(b)-(f)orbid your entire wood stockpile before the caravan shows up, ideally right at the beginning of the season.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Sometimes even then, the supply can be iffy. In one game where I was in a similar situation as you (treeless biome and had to import wood), the mountainhomes seemed to be having a wood shortage or maybe wood was equally scarce, so they would bring like 4 or 5 logs. The humans were pretty generous with wood in that game though.

Its also possible to trick the elves into bringing alot of wood by forbidding the wood that you have. Found that out when I accidentially made them do it when I forbid the wood to keep a fey dwarf from getting it as the shop which they claimed was one that I couldn't isolate real easily.

Yeah the mountain homes brought 7 logs of wood! But luckily I have my polar bear farm working. Another question how do you put animals in cages?

Construct a cage.  Then [q]uery it and [a]ssign the animal you want to the cage.  You can put as many animals as you want in a single cage.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.
