On the increasing wave of Ad-Bots
« on: October 26, 2009, 11:26:21 am »

What does it say about this forum and by extension, Dwarf Fortress, that a year ago, there was almost no spam-bot posts, and now they are becoming ever more frequent?

Judging from the content of the advertisements, it is clear that what is drawing such posts to the forum is the games part of bay12games.com. It's always been there, however, so why all the postings now? Lets see what The Google has to say.

http://www.google.com/trends?q=dwarf+fortress

It is evident here that Dwarf Fortress in 2009 is more -consistently- popular than it has ever been before. While there have been spikes around every new release, attributable to postings on other sites and forums, like The Independent Gaming Source.com and others, the average balances out. Although it looks like it's strangely popular in Finland, nearly all of this activity is attributable to the 2007 .33a release.

Most  importantly, though in 2009, the Search volume index broke 4 for the first time in early 2009, where the Search Index of 1 is the average over the full lifetime.

Upon that, as Toady One does more interviews for podcasts across the internet, more and more gaming websites will link back to the Dwarf Fortress site. These interviews are then linked to on other forums and blogs, and it's not too hard to see how the spider web grows bigger and bigger.
